A Tale of a Lumberjack - Veinminer Hex

Post by FrostedLyre »

There once was a man who lived in the woods. He made his living by chopping wood, old trees and young alike, stockpiling their wood for fire or carpentry. He would trade good wood for meat and bread, fabrics and oil. It was all possible due to his axe, an heirloom passed down from his father from his father's father and once again from his father's father's father. It was magnificent in his hands, years of wax and varnish on the handle gave it a dark golden sheen, and the blade cut through wood like through flesh. The man was getting old now, though, and he had no son to which he could hand it down to. How tragic!

This Hex was inspired by my frustration with cutting down Ars Nouveau Archtrees. There's just too much wood in them! :x Originally, it was just going to be a treefeller, but I realised that it would essentially do the same thing as a veinminer. It requires Moreiotas.

It basically just checks the blocks around the block you're looking at, breaks them, and then repeats this while keeping the type of block on the stack. Be careful looking at dirt and stone! There are no guards for that.

In his sleep, he dreamt of a forest, trees that he was lost in. He searched for his axe to cut them down, but he could not see it. The dark of the canopy blocked all sight, hid beasts in the tall trees that would devour and consume him. This could not be! He thrashed in this dream, arms afrenzy in the still cold air, and as he swung, the trees themselves uprooted, and he saw the sun's light fall before him, the forest dissolving away.

There was something in the sky, its hand lazily offered to him. It shone so brightly in his mind's eye that he could not dare to look any closer, for if he did, he was sure his eyes would scorch from their sockets. It was beautiful. And he was scared, and so he asked,
Who- who be ye, o' magnificent thing?
It did not reply in words, for he already knew. He reached out to touch its hand. When he awoke, something would be different.

For a more detailed explanation of how the hex works, it uses a weird modification of the Gemini-Hermes while loop, which I have dubbed Hermes' Twin because I think the name is cool. Duplicate instructions, execute, repeat. It checks for if the list is empty, then either executes the instructions, or doesn't. Then, it finds all the blocks around the block gotten from the original list, and checks if they are the same type, and either saves and breaks the block, or deletes it from the list. This way, the output list only ever contains blocks that had material in the last iteration.

The woods are different when he finally opens his eyes, his real eyes. They are sparse, an ancient Wald shrunken down in centuries by the work of men like himself, under the rule of kings. He reaches for his axe, but it feels strange in his hands now. The wood is too grainy, its usually smooth surface revealing itself to be unimaginably rough. He doesn't understand how he never noticed. He looks upon the blade, and sees that it is, though normally dull, like a club. It is heavy, and he knows its weight exactly, and how much less it weighs from its years of sharpening. He does not know how he knows. The units it tells him about are not known by any other. What is "It"? Who speaks to him? Is he going mad?

He mutters to himself, something that we cannot hear. Stumbling through the woods, there is a sudden realisation. He is aware of the woods, now, of a murmuring and a breathing within it that frightens and petrifies him. And yet, It is not angry. He knows, for it does not strike him dead now, this giant thing of a million metric tonnes. He knows there are other things here too, that stalk and stomp and scratch and squeal. There is something new, here, shaped like a man. He can see what makes up the man, its skin and flesh, its bones and eyes, and he can separate them.

Oh, howdy, lumberman! How do you do?
He holds his hand out, and it begins to scream, its tongue peeling apart before it can beg for its life.

Anyways, yeah, that's the hex . Hope you enjoy :P :P :P
